Love Your Room

I just love a blank wall. It's like a canvas, screaming for some adornment, some color. For me, decoration gives a house or room that homey feel, but for some home decoration is a daunting task. Let this be no longer! Here are some tips to make a room feel like home.

1. When you hang small pictures or objects, it's best to do so in threes because of the symmetry. For whatever reason, this is more pleasing to the eye than hanging things in twos or fours. For example, lets say you have an open space above your fireplace. A great idea would be to hang three pictures of your kids above it, in frames that match the color of the fireplace.

2. Pick a color theme. This might seem a little obvious, but let me elaborate. In general, cool colors (i.e. blues, purples, blacks and greys) go best with other cool colors and warm colors (i.e. reds, oranges, pinks and yellows) go best with other warm colors. That being said, you need to also pick the feel that you want for the room. A living room or kitchen may call for an inviting feel, so using yellows or greens might be the best way to go. In contrast, a bedroom might call for a more relaxing feel, so blues or dark reds might be better colors.

3. Choose solid colors for your furniture that match your color theme. Patterns go out of style all the time. But, if you choose a dark colored faux leather couch, you will be able to have that thing for years, and it will most likely match any entertainment unit or coffee table you put in front of it.

4. If you're going to hang up art, make sure you have a theme for that too. It looks weird when you have an abstract painting of a woman on one wall and then a print of a Monet landscape on the opposite wall. However, you could very well have each painting in a separate room.

5. Go to the thrift store! I have found so many cool paintings and photos for my place that match perfectly, and I never spend more than $10 on them. Plus, you often find one of a kind pieces that you wouldn't find anywhere else.

6. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT! Be creative! Figure out a theme that YOU like and run with it.
